ISG helps an automotive OEM to assess the MES market and recommend MES solutions to position it for a digital factory transformation.
Opportunity
An automotive industry original equipment manufacturer (OEM) is a leader in innovative thermal and energy management solutions. It had just completed its evaluation and selection of market-leading enterprise resource planning (ERP) solutions to consolidate from multiple ERPs down to one global ERP. Next it wanted to evaluate the market for the latest in manufacturing execution system (MES) solutions to position it for digital factory transformation across its 30 plants in China, Asia Pacific, Africa, Americas and Europe.
The manufacturer was interested in replacing its internally-built, legacy MES to achieve significant productivity improvements, enable its digital transformation and perform critical integration into its new ERP solution and plant floor operations technology.
Imagining IT Differently
ISG captured and reviewed the requirements from the company’s existing MES across production management, customer requirements, equipment management and reporting and monitoring. We also incorporated future-state requirements for enterprise application integration (EAI) availability, PLC (programmable logic controller) communications, analysis and machine learning, big data processing, mobility and cloud.
ISG leveraged its existing knowledge of the MES solutions and system integrators along with market research covering 70-plus solutions and system integrator interactions to recommend six MES solutions for more detailed evaluation by the company. ISG defined the weighting and criteria for evaluating the MES solution finalist against its requirements.
Future Made Possible
- The company received ISG’s evaluation of the MES finalists, ranked against the weighted criteria. It also received ISG’s recommendation to continue the sourcing evaluation in further detail against the top three MES solutions.
- It also received ISG’s evaluation of the top 7 service integrators’ capabilities and services within Level 3 MES/MOM and Level 2 control systems.
- The company benefited from ISG developing the sourcing strategy and constructs for the MES solution. ISG also developed the roadmap for sourcing the MES solution, along with the implementation and deployment across the 30 manufacturing plants globally.
